A Green Affair

On Sunday we hung out at my parent’s farm with our friends. We were pretty excited to have everyone up (we made welcome bags stuffed with La Paloma farm gear)! It was a pretty chill day. We snacked on venison, shrimp ceviche and salmon. We sat with full bellies and listened to my dad recall his favorite hunting stories. We caught a few fish, swam in the pond and loved on the baby swans. My mom made lobster rolls for dinner along with the usual fixins. After dinner, we sat on the porch and enjoyed one another’s company. I wish every Sunday could be that good!

Hillary, Dan, Diego and I took a stroll down the street for ice cream Friday after work. Down by the river is a brightly colored Victorian house that serves ice cream! I completely forgot that this place existed, no less, is minutes from the office! I’m sure this will become a weekly hangout for us. Diego thought it was pretty swell too!

Bath time with Diego is always a treat. He drags his feet all the way to the bathroom, plops down, refusing to stand up and avoids eye contact with me- I can’t help but laugh! Once I coax him into the shower he just stands there, so pathetic and grumbles the whole time. Then he has to endure the millions of kisses I plant on him ‘cause I’m a sucker for those sad eyes!

We started Sunday off with donuts from our favorite local bakery, then my mom opened up her Mother’s Day gifts from us kids. Leah wasn’t in town this weekend, so she sent my mom a beautiful email with a link to a radio diary that was right up her alley- it’s a great listen, I highly recommend!

On Saturday I stopped by The Flea Off Market and this time around I brought Diego with me! He did so good being around all the people and other pups- I was pretty nervous that he would jump on people or knock over whole booths with his extra long body, but no such thing happened! Dan and Hillary of Kin Ship Press had a booth set up, so we hung with them for a bit before we headed to the farm for the weekend.

Yesterday Hillary and I stopped into Schimpff’s Confectionery, which has been whipping up sweet delights since 1891! I’ve been there several times before but never had my camera with me, so I made sure to grab some photos this time around. Hillary bought some chocolate covered peanuts and chocolate dipped pretzels and I bought Schimpff’s infamous cinnamon red hots- they are so good! Connected to the candy store is their museum, where you can check out old candy memorabilia and see candy being made. In the front window you can watch the ladies dipping chocolate, hello dream job! If you’re ever in the area you should definitely check out this local favorite!

As we were walking down Bardstown road last week, I noticed a white bike chained to a tree. When we got closer to the tree, I realized it was a memorial. I’ve always been fascinated with roadside memorials. I know they are quite controversial- many see them as a distraction, among other complaints. Maybe its the folklorist in me, but I welcome the tradition of them and the love and grief that they symbolize.

Today is my sister’s birthday! Leah will probably kill me for posting this picture, but it’s one of my favorites of her! When I think of Leah this is what I see, much to her dismay! I see a girl (sorry, but you are forever thirteen to me!) full of life and happiness. Leah is the best thing that ever happened to me- she inspires me to be a better person. She is my heart. She cheers me up when I’m down and every time I’m with her I can’t help but be grateful that she’s my sister and best friend. Happy birthday my love! xx

I love hanging out at my parent’s house… if it were up to me I’d spend every weekend there! I always feel rejuvenated after spending time on the farm. The combination of time spent with family, a belly full of home cooked meals and days spent lounging around (naps out in the sun!) wipe away any stress from the week.

On Sunday morning I was up early with Diego (nature calls!) and was mesmerized at how calm and beautiful the early hours of the day were. I brought my camera along as we walked around the farm and took photos of odds and ends along the way. At some point when I was snapping pictures Diego snuck away from me- I later found him hanging out by the duck pens. As you can see, the ducks were a tad camera shy!

So this happened yesterday… Our tour van was parked at the loft and some hooligans launched a rock through the window (that’s Diego’s seat in the van- he loves to stick his head out that window!). We were pretty bummed. I picked up the glass as best I could- I didn’t have a proper broom and scoop so I used a manila folder and rubber dishwashing gloves. It just makes me sad that people can be so mean. that’s life

Yesterday morning Ashley and I rose extra early so we could follow our destiny and be in a Long John Silver’s commercial! Ashley has always wanted to be an extra and I’m down for trying (almost) anything once, so we drove down to our local LJS where they were shooting a commercial for the soon to be re-released thick cut cod. The premise of the commercial is that we, the customers, are really excited for the fish and can’t wait to get in the store to get our cod on. Ashley and I were pretty excited when we got picked to stand second in line behind the window- a sure win that we will be in the shot! We spent the morning cheering, fist punching and chanting “THICK THICK THICK” and “THICK CUT COD”!
The commercial airs nationwide from May 28-July 29!

After dinner last night, we took a stroll down Bardstown Road with our friends to get dessert. It’s Derby time here in Kentucky, so it’s kind of nuts everywhere, especially down where we live (our loft is minutes from the track)! I’m getting out of the city for the weekend to try to escape some of the madness!

On Saturday, Anthony, aka Prawn, ran the Louisville mini marathon. It was his first time running a marathon. We celebrated his victory with cookies from Penn Station (his favorite!) and a steak dinner! How awesome are the Team Prawn signs that Hillary and Dan made?!

We’ve been pretty busy around these parts finishing up the projects that we’ve left hanging for a while. We bought six vintage Eames shell chairs last year for our dining room. The only problem was, well, we went almost a year without a dining room table. When we finally found one we loved we got the ball rolling on the chairs again. This weekend Anthony assembled the bases and gave the shells a nice scrubbing. We couldn’t be happier with the results! Little by little, it’s all coming together!

Last night we celebrated my mom’s birthday at Harvest. Everything we ordered was delicious (my favorite was the cheese board!). We finished the meal with a very special cake that my parent’s friends got her… needless to say, we all had a good laugh!
